A time to weep

2 Samuel 1:17 David took up this lament concerning Saul and his son Jonathan…

Saul was finally slain. Worldly thinking would have David jumping up and down, praising God that his enemy was gone. Not David. He wept. He took time to write a song, a lament, and taught it to the people. Such character!

We live in an age where often do not know how to weep or lament anymore. We are the “feel good” generation. Therefore, if something bad happens, we rather escape, ignoring the situation altogether, or we resort to complaining. Sometimes though, it’s good to weep.

The act of lamenting is healthy for your soul. The Bible says in the book of Ecclesiastes: There is “a time to weep, and a time to laugh; a time to mourn, and a time to dance.” (Eccl. 3:4)

When is the last time something bad happened, that you took time to weep. Weeping and lamenting cleanses the soul.

David was a man who kept his soul healthy. That prepared him for the next stage in his life.
