Led by the Spirit, tempted by the devil, empowered by God

Luke 4:1-2 Jesus, full of the Holy Spirit, left the Jordan and was led by the Spirit into the wilderness, where for forty days he was tempted by the devil.

This is one of the most interesting verses of Scripture. We read about Jesus, the Holy Spirit and the devil, all in one sentence.

Apparently the Holy Spirit led Jesus into the dessert. And the devil was awaiting Him there. Sometimes we think that God will prevent us from meeting the devil, however what we learn from this passage – is that Jesus came out of the desert even stronger than He went into it.

The devil could not succeed against Jesus. Having just been baptised and filled with the Holy Spirit (Luke 3) the dessert became His testing ground. Like a sword forged in the oven, Jesus came out sharper and brighter!

Know that the devil’s hands will not be able to grasp you – if you have been baptised and filled by the Spirit. You have an oil on you and are so slippery, that he cannot get a hold of you. However, you need to go through the test…

The father had said “this is my son, whom I love” (Luke 3). Now the son had to be tested: was he really the son? Luke 4 proved that He was. He came out of the dessert in the power of the Spirit (verse 14).

You will go into your dessert full of the Spirit, knowing in your head that you are the son. You will come out of it in the power of the Spirit, having experienced in your heart and hands that you really are the son!
