Deuteronomy 8:2 Remember how the Lord your God led you all the way in the wilderness these forty years.
It is so easy to forget where our blessings come from. When we are in the wilderniss, we cry out to the Lord and He helps us. But when we live in the promised land, we think we don’t need God anymore. God tells His people at least five times in this chapter to “remember” Him and “not forget” what He has done for them.
We live in a (western) world where most of us are richer than the world has ever been. Even if you are earning less than the mean income, you are still in the top 1% of richest people in the world, when you live in The Netherlands. Let that truth sink in.
We have a roof over our head, we have food to eat, we even have television. In such circumstances it is easy to forget God. When things are going well, it is easy to depend on the circumstances rather than on God. Even when things go wrong, we tend to trust the circumstances instead of looking to God. We need to grow up as true sons and daughters of the King. Remembering who we are and continually walking with Him. The best way to do this is to repeat His truths and promises and to tithe. Tithing helps you remember that He is in charge, and that He comes first. It is an act of worship that helps us remember where our blessings come from.
