1 Corinthians 7:1-2
Now regarding the questions you asked in your letter: “Is it good to abstain from sexual relations?” I say because there is so much immorality, each man should have his own wife and each woman should have her own husband.
People regularly ask us, what is the position of the church when it comes to sex? The church in Corinth said: maybe it’s better to abstain from sex altogether. What is Paul’s answer? Let’s read, this is our position about sex and marriage, it’s all there in the Bible, so clear:
I say because there is so much immorality, each man should have his own wife and each woman should have her own husband. (verse 2)
(Apostle Paul)
We see here, that there is still a standard for sex. If there is immorality, there is also such a thing as morality. Paul says if there’s wrong ways there are also right ways. There is still a standard, a manual. God designed us, and He designed sex. We don’t have to make it up for ourselves. He gave us the standard. And that standard is:
- Each man should have his own wife.
- Each woman should have her own husband.
Full stop. That’s it. That’s our position. Our manual from God.
“But I have no husband.”
Then you don’t get to have sex yet.
Sex is something so valuable, it is so beautiful, powerful and fragile, that God wants to protect it in the context and covenant of marriage. God does not give us a suggestion on this, He gives us a standard.
Not to make our lives miserable, but comfortable.
