2 Kings 4:2-3 What can I do to help you? Elisha asked. “Tell me what do you have in the house? “Nothing at all, except a flask of olive oil,” she replied. And Elisha said, “Borrow as many empty jars as you can from your friends and neighbors. (NLT)
In 2 Kings 4 we read the story of a widow at the point of losing her sons to creditors to pay her debts. Then, she seeks help from Elisha, and he asked her: “What do you have in the house?” Her response is “Nothing, Except”.
Now, we are all created in the image of God, and God is the creator of all things. Being in the image of God and choosing to live for Christ is welcoming the Holy God to make us His dwelling place (John 14:23), which means that with the Spirit of the Lord in us, we will always have everything required to bring glory to God.
Sometimes from the outside, we might feel the need to first say that we have nothing; however, this nothing is according to the worldly standards and not the heavenly one.
God is ready to use our “except”! You might have nothing, except:
- Your time
- Your prayer
- Your physical strength
- Your home
- Your food
- Your willingness
- Your generosity
- Your smile
- Your money: now many might think having money automatically means having something; but the best possession we can ever have is eternal life that has been freely given to us through Jesus Christ (John 3:15-16)
- Your friends and neighbors: In the passage above, we see God blessing the widow through her friends and neighbors.
Our except might seem very common and mundane, but God will always use what we have available to bless the people around us and us.
Don’t underestimate your surroundings. You are where you are for a purpose (Isaiah 26:7)! Hence, invest in Godly friendships, love your family and neighbors.
And remember, you always have something that God can use for His glory!
All you have to do is acknowledge what you have in you and allow the Holy Spirit to work through you.
Prayer of the day: Dear Jesus, teach us to trust that you can turn our nothing into blessings. Amen!!
